Game genres you didn't know about!
Solving mysteries in endless dungeons, racing your favourite automobiles against your rivals, creating a house out of cows or getting caught in magical world of infinite possibilities. The gaming world is AWESOME. It’s a perfect way to escape the boredom of everyday life and do whatever you want to do. But are you playing the game that’s right for you? Maybe you like princess games, but have you ever tried an adventure in space? Come along while we explain to you the WIDE VARIETY of gaming genres you didn’t know about (and maybe you’ll fall in love with a new game).
First of all we have ACTION and ADVENTURE!! You could be swinging from vines, jumping off buildings, flying through the sky or looking for Aztec treasure in these exciting games. If you enjoy a fast-paced adventure with a lot of skill involved, this genre could be right for you. This lot of games usually include themes similar to science-fiction, being futuristic and new or themes of fantasy with mysterious characters and weapons. If this all sounds appealing to you, some games you might enjoy are: The Legend of Zelda series, Skylanders series and Metal Gear Solid.
Arcade games may remind you of the old coin-operated ones your parents used to play but ARCADE is an actual genre of gaming and it’s a whole bunch of fun. They’re short, simple but definitely not easy and take a lot of skill to beat. You’ll need a clever mind to win these games and it very well may take you more than one try but if you win, you’ve got the respect from all gamers. Games that run along this line are: Pac-man, Pong, Frogger, Duck Hunt and Game & Watch (oldies but goodies).
Next genre is my favourite, PUZZLE. You’ve got to use your brain to discover the secrets, codes and mysterious packed within these games. Players must unravel clues, talk to different people and piece together the parts for a puzzle-genius’ victory! You must be able to deal with getting stuck for a while but once you figure out the problem, the reward is a whole ton of joy. Some games under this genre are: The Portal series, Tetris, The Legend of Zelda series (although it’s also classified as Adventure) and The Candy Crush Saga.
Shots are fired! Bullets ricochet! Diving for cover! You capture the flag and win the battle. SHOOTER games will have you out on the battlefield in an array of different styles of matches; Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Payload etc. You’ll need crazy reflexes for these ones and the ability to assess a situation and go in for an attack. Some of the best of these genre are: Counterstrike Global Offensive, Overwatch and Splatoon. (Remember to ask your parents first before you play any shooter games)
STRATEGY! Thinking, planning, designing and then delivering the final blow and conquering a city. These games are best for a deep thinker with a mind for leadership (and for someone who won’t get wobbly knees in the face of battle). If you can manage to keep your wits about you, some games you might like are: the Starcraft series, Age of Empires and Clash of Clans.
A ROLE PLAYING GAME (also known as RPG) is one where you embark on an adventure as the protagonist is a large world of possibility. You’ll be levelling up, finding treasure, saving princesses and sailing the ocean in a wild ride if fun. Some great RPG are: Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft and Xenoblade Chronicles.
As clear as it sounds, RACING style games will have you behind the wheel of a car in an epic race against your opponents. This could be by land, sea or air; It doesn’t matter as long as you’re up against some rivals and you’ve got a score to settle. Great games like this are: the Grand Turismo series, the Mario Kart series and Need for Speed.
And last but definitely not least we have the SANDBOX genre. This genre forces creativity to flow out of you as you shape each and every thing around you. You build a house, car, plane, planet, hat, computer, cat and ANYTHING else you can possibly think of. Let your imagination go wild! Awesome sandbox games include: Minecraft, Little Big Planet and Terraria.
Now you know all about the different types and styles of games to play and now it’s up to you. Go and play a new game! To infinity and beyond!
